What is 'Tork'?
Tork Weightlifting Club is an organization promoting the sport and benefits of Olympic Weightlifting in Calgary Alberta and the surrounding community.  Tork opporates in collaboration with the Alberta Weightlifting Association to foster the development of amateur athletes, coaches and officials in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.

Tork Weightlifting Club was incorporated in the Province of Alberta, Canada in August 2008 as a 'not for profit' society.

Tork Etymology
The name Tork is derived from Tork Angegh, more commonly known as “Tork”; an ancient Armenian god of power, bravery, and battle.  These are qualities that come into effect in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.  The Armenian influence for this organization comes from the coach who is Armenian by birth and has been a major driving force in revamping Olympic Weightlifting in Calgary.

Tork, which is pronounced the same as 'torque', is bio-mechanically essential in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.  Defined as forces acting in a curved direction around pivots, "advanced weightlifting comprises mastering the maximization of torque of the body joints, while keeping the barbell moving under vertical forces with minimal bar torque." (Essentials of Weightlifting & Strength Training, Mohamed F. El-Hewie, MD)

Tork's current, unofficial logo is based on a famous statute outside of Yerevan, Armenia "Tork Angegh" (1982, sculptor Nerses Charkhchian/K.Nurijanian).  The logo captures the strength and dynamic power of the mythical character while he manhandles a block of creation, illustrated using the Tork colour palette.
